New 50% Tariffs on Steel and Aluminum Imports to Take Effect June 4

Donald Trump has announced a significant increase in tariffs on steel and aluminum imports, raising them from 25% to 50%. The new tariffs will come into effect on Tuesday, June 4, according to a statement Trump made on Truth Social on Friday.

Earlier, speaking at a rally in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, Trump revealed the planned tariff hike on steel. His online statement confirmed that the new rates will apply to aluminum imports as well.

“The U.S. is raising tariffs on steel and aluminum from 25% to 50% starting Wednesday, June 4,” Trump wrote.

Legal Challenges May Delay Implementation

On Wednesday, the U.S. Court of International Trade blocked the tariff decision, ruling that Trump had overstepped presidential authority. The court’s decision suspended not only the newly announced duties on imports from 185 countries and regions but also previously implemented tariffs on imports from Canada, China, and Mexico.

However, the ruling did not affect existing tariffs on imports of automobiles, auto parts, steel, and aluminum.

Appeals Court Halts Injunction Temporarily

On Thursday, a U.S. appellate court temporarily lifted the lower court’s injunction, allowing the tariff plan to proceed—at least for now. White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt said during a briefing that the Biden administration plans to escalate the case to the U.S. Supreme Court.
